Magnesium Oxide

 

Magnesium Oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is an ionic compound. It is a white hygroscopic solid mineral that occurs naturally as periclase and is a source of magnesium. It is the raw material for smelting magnesium.

 

Magnesium Oxide is a alkaline oxide, If reaction to water, it can generate magnesium hydroxide which is difficult to dissolve in water. If reaction to acid, it will generate magnesium salt. Magnesium Oxide is used as refractory materials, such as the magnesia brick, crucible; and used as pigments for paints and cosmetics. It also can be used as the filler of rubber, insulation materials. Calcining magnesium carbonate can produce light Magnesium Oxide and calcining alkaline magnesium carbonate can produce heavy Magnesium Oxide
