As a hydrogen source or reducing agent to prepare other hydrides amides and 2H isotopic compound, as a shielding material for thermal neutrons; Used as dissolve drugs, condensation agent, reductive alkylation reagents, Klein Robinson reagent, catalyst, and also can be used as desiccant.

 

Its potential as a reversible "storage" medium for hydrogen has led to interest in improving the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reaction kinetics.
