Adenosine is an active substance based on nucleosides and purines. It is a nucleoside formed by the binding of adenine to β-glycosidic bonds to D-ribose. It is widely present in all types of cells. However, it may also be a compounded nucleoside. Adenosine phosphates such as ATP are important energy carriers in biochemical reactions.
Adenosine is a natural nucleotide that is an intermediate product of metabolism and one of the important active ingredients in the body. Its action is achieved by activating adenosine receptors (A receptors). In the atria, sinus node, and atrioventricular node, adenosine activates G protein-coupled potassium channels by binding to A receptors, increasing K+ efflux, and hyperpolarizing cell membranes, reducing autoregulation. It can also significantly increase the level of cGMP, prolong the atrioventricular node ERP and slow down the conduction, inhibit sympathetic or isoproterenol induced early and late depolarization and exert antiarrhythmic effect. Adenosine is an inhibitory neuromodulator of the central nervous system that provides a signal between the brain's energy storage and energy needs to reach a balance.
