Ribavirin is a non-interferon-inducing, broad spectrum antiviral nucleoside. Ribavirin is reported to be active against RSV, HIV,HCV, and other infectious agents. The compound’s metabolite, ribavirin-5′-phosphate, inhibits inosine monophosphate (IMP)dehydrogenase.

Ribavirin is a prodrug, which when metabolised resembles purine RNA nucleotides. In this form it interferes with RNA metabolism required for viral replication.
