Melatonin is an amine hormone produced primarily by the pineal gland of mammals and humans. The human pineal gland is a bean-sized tissue attached to the posterior wall of the third ventricle. It has also been reported that small amounts of melatonin can be produced in the retina and accessory lacrimal glands of mammals. Melatonin is also produced in the eyes, brain and skin of some ectotherms (such as frogs) and in certain algae. Melatonin molecular formula is C13N2H16O2, molecular weight 232.27, melting point 116℃ ~ 118℃, chemical name is N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (N-acetyl 5-methoxytryptamine).
