Superiority:

Ursolic acid can be isolated from various medicinal plants, Lamiaceae family being one of the most known sources of triterpenes, with contents up to 2.95% d.w. In Rosmarinus officinalis leaves, one of the traditional commercial sources. UA has also been identified in a variety of sources, particularly in leaves and flowers. The triterpenic acids oleanolic and ursolic were recently detected for the first time in wild edible mushrooms and in some commercial dried fruits.

A cell-permeable plant-derived pentacyclic triterpene acid that displays anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antitumor activities. Shown to inhibit the phosphatase activity of SHP2, PTP1B, and TCPTP (IC50 = 2.73, 3.08 and 3.33 µM, respectively) as well as induce IR autophosphorylation independent of its phosphatase inhibitory activity. Ursolic acid is also reported to inhibit NF-κB and STAT3 pathway activation in cancer cultures, resulting in enhanced sensitivity to chemotherapy agents and apoptotic cell death.

UA content in the samples from different sources were significantly different, and the geographic variation was also observed in Paulownia fortune, Ocimum species, Argania spinosa. The outer barks of Eucalyptus trees from temperate and Mediterranean zones are richer in triterpenic acids than the species from sub-tropical and tropical regions.

Details:

Ursolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid that has been isolated from M. pumila and has diverse biological activities, including anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective properties. It inhibits the proliferation of HepG2 liver, MCF-7 breast, and Caco-2 colon cancer cells (EC50s = 87.4, 14.4, and 34.4 µM, respectively). Ursolic acid reverses increases in hepatic steatosis, levels of hepatic triglycerides and free fatty acids, and hepatic TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8 mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner in a high-fat diet-induced rat model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Ursolic acid also scavenges 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals (IC50 = 59.7 µg/ml) and inhibits the growth of several strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro including S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and S. flexneri (MICs = 32-512 µg/ml). Formal Name: 3beta-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid. CAS Number: 77-52-1. Synonyms: Bungeolic Acid, Maerotaine, Malol, NSC 4060, NSC 167406, Prunol. Molecular Formula: C30H48O3. Formula Weight: 456.7.
