STPP or Sodium Tripolyphosphate is an inorganic compound with formula Na5P3O10. STPP, Sodium Tripolyphosphate is the sodium salt of the polyphosphate Penta-anion, which is the conjugate base of triphosphoric acid. Sodium tripolyphosphate is produced by heating a stoichiometric mixture of disodium phosphate, Na2HPO4, and monosodium phosphate, NaH2PO4, under carefully controlled conditions.

Properties: white granular or powder. Density of 0.35-0.90g/cm3, melting point of 622 ℃. Soluble in water, aqueous solution is alkaline, PH of 1% aqueous solution is 9.7. It is generally hydrolyzed into phosphite in water, and it has good ability of complexation metal ions. It can be combined with calcium, magnesium, iron and other metal ions to produce soluble complex. It can soften hard water. As an inorganic surfactant, it has the properties of a certain organic surfactant.

Other uses include "ceramics (increase viscosity of the glazes upto a certain limit), leather tanning (as masking agent and synthetic tanning agent - SYNTAN), anticaking, setting retarders, flame retardants, paper, anticorrosion pigments, textiles, rubber manufacture, fermentation, antifreeze."STPP is used as a polyanion crosslinker in polysaccharide based drug delivery.
