GENIPIN 6902-77-8 Gardenia extract
Genipin is an aglycone derived from an iridoid glycoside called Geniposide present in fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis.Genipin is an excellent natural cross-linker for protein, collagen, gelatin, and chitosan cross-linking.It has much less toxic than glutaraldehyde and many other commonly used synthetic cross -linking regents.It has been used as a Chinese traditional medicine to relieve the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.It is also used for pharmaceutical purposes, such as choleretic action for liver diseases control.
Genipin, as one of the popular approaches in controlling drug delivery from the polymeric carriers, is suitably achieved by the inclusion of crosslinking agents into the formulations at different concentrations. Nevertheless, addition of the chemical crosslinkers such as glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde etc, used in the drug delivery systems causes very serious cytotoxic reactions.
These chemical crosslinking agents did not offer any significant advantageous effects when compared to the natural crosslinking agents for instance genipin, which is quite less toxic, biocompatible and offers very stable crosslinked products. Based on the earlier reports the safety of this particular natural crosslinker is very well established, since it has been widely used as a Chinese traditional medicine for long-time, isolated from fruits of the plant Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. This concise article largely portrayed the value of this unique natural crosslinker, utilized in controlling the drug delivery from the various formulations.

Furthermore, genipin can be used as a cross-linking agent for immobilized enzymes, as a regulating agent for drug delivery, as the raw material for gardenia blue pigment preparation, and as the intermediate for alkaloid syntheses.
Besides the medicinal usage, Genipin has also been a wide range of applications in other areas, such as react with amino acid to be Gardenia Blue which can be widely used in food, printing and dyeing industry;
* Used as a biological fingerprint capture reagents; or natural cross-linking agent for enzyme immobilization and preparation of gel capsules as well as for medicinal uses.
* Applied in healthy product industry, geniposide mainly used as product of dispelling heat, cooling blood and diuretic;
* Applied in pharmaceutical field, geniposide mainly used as the raw material of drugs for treating cardiovascular and hepatobiliary diseases.
Genipin is widely used in herbal medicine, and the dark blue pigments obtained by its spontaneous reaction with amino acids or proteins have been used in the fabrication of food dyes.
1.Genipin powde can effectively reduce internal heat;
