What is Ceramide?

Ceramide is a key lipid component in the cells of the most lateral cuticle layer of human skin. It is a water-soluble lipid substance with a structure similar to that of the material making up the skin’s cuticle layer. Ceramide can quickly penetrate the skin, where it binds with water in the cuticle layer to form a network structure that helps lock in moisture. As a moisturizer, Ceramide is highly effective. Both Ceramide 3 and Ceramide 3B fall under the category of Ceramide NP. The fatty acid components of these ceramides include stearic acid and oleic acid, which are non-hydroxyl fatty acids (N). They are linked by amide bonds to phytosphingosine (P). Ceramide NP is not a single substance, but rather a general term for a group of ceramides that share a similar structural principle.

Ceramides are a class of amide compounds formed by the dehydration of long-chain fatty acids and sphingomyelin. They make up 40% to 50% of the sebum in the stratum corneum, where they are a key component of the intercellular matrix and play a crucial role in maintaining moisture balance. Simply put, the stratum corneum acts like a wall, with epidermal cells as the bricks and ceramides serving as the cement that stabilizes the structure. This “wall” not only helps lock in moisture but also aids in repairing the skin’s lipid barrier. Many of the benefits of ceramides are utilized in skin care.

Food Industry:

Ceramide has been utilized as a raw material to develop health foods with physiological functions such as regulating blood pressure, inhibiting immune activation, hindering lipase activity, and preventing cancer cell proliferation. Vegetable ceramide products were officially introduced to the market in 1998, primarily in the form of functional drinks, tablets, and other nutritional supplements. While there are some ceramide-containing jelly products that have received positive feedback for their flavor and texture, other products like ceramide-enriched bread, yogurt, baked pastries, and salad dressings have also been trialed successfully, with no issues in flavor or production. This indicates the potential for further development of health foods, such as soft capsules and fortified tablets, based on ceramide's physiological functions.

Cosmetics:

Ceramide is used in products that enhance skin elasticity, smoothness, and hydration. It helps reduce the formation of wrinkles and is especially effective in moisturizing elderly skin. Ceramide, being an excellent moisturizing agent, is easily absorbed by the skin and can also enhance the penetration of other nutrients. Many renowned international cosmetics brands have incorporated ceramide into skincare, haircare products, moisturizers, lipsticks, powders, eye shadows, and soaps.

Pharmaceuticals:

Ceramide plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including the induction of cytokine effects, vitamin D3 signaling, and apoptosis (programmed cell death). It is recognized as a second messenger in the process of sphingomyelin breakdown and is involved in key cellular functions such as growth, proliferation, differentiation, and damage. Ceramide's role in apoptosis and cell differentiation, especially in keratinocyte cultures, has attracted increasing attention in medical research.
