Application
There are two main types of antimicrobial peptides produced in the human body: defensin family peptides and cathelicidin family peptides. Although there are many members of the defensin family peptides, there is only one antimicrobial peptide product, LL-37, in cathelicidin. LL-37 is the C-terminal cleavage product of the cathelicidin peptide Hcap-18, which can directly kill bacteria, fungi and viruses.
LL-37 also plays an immunomodulatory role by chemotactic immune cells, regulating the secretion of inflammatory promoters/inhibitors, and coordinating innate and acquired immunity.
