What is iodine?
Iodine (English: Iodine) is a non-metallic chemical element with the element symbol I and atomic number 53. Iodine is a purple or black non-metallic element with an orthorhombic crystal structure. This toxic element is easy to sublimate, so it is easy to purify by sublimation. Iodine is insoluble in water, but soluble in common solvents such as ethanol.
Application of iodine
1. Iodine is used as a preservative for fungicides, dyes, tinctures and medicines
2. It is also used to produce vanadium metal in the McKechnie-Seybolt process, which is a reduction reaction in the presence of iodine. Iodine is also used in a similar way to produce high-purity zirconium.
3. Many multivitamins and mineral preparations contain over-the-counter iodine supplements. Iodine is one of the important raw materials for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The World Health Organization has proposed a recommended supply standard for human iodine intake, which has reached 2.5 times the basic human requirement.
