Hexamethylenetetramine (cas 100-97-0) (HMTA) was used to modify the raw Chinese lacquer and the film was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the property of the Chinese lacquer film was improved due to the presence of HMTA. HMTA was decomposed at the high temperature, thus amine and formaldehyde were released. Formaldehyde and urushiol was then condensed and result in the improvement on the properties of Chinese lacquer film. Compare to the unmodified lacquer film, the touch-free drying time was reduced from 130 min to 60 min, the gloss was increased, the alkali resistance was improved. Acid resistance, hardness and distinctness of image (DOI) was almost unchanged.
