  • The Influence of the Root System on the Metabolism of 2,3[3H]-Gibberellin A20 by Shoots of Phaseolus coccineus L. var. Prizewinner

SummaryEvidence was sought to help substantiate the hypothesis of a root-shoot interlinked gibberellin biosynthetic pathway in light-grown seedlings of Phaseolus coccineus. Application of [3H]-gibberellin A20 to apical buds of seedlings of P. coccineus resulted in negligible transport of this compound into roots. A possible role for root-produced cytokinins as factors regulating gibberellin metabolism in apical buds of P. coccineus was investigated by examining the effect of root excision and cytokinin application on [3H]-gibberellin A20 metabolism in shoot apical buds of this plant. The results obtained provided little support for roots as a major site of metabolism of shoot-produced gibberellin A20 or for an involvement of root-synthesized cytokinins as regulators of gibberellin A20 metabolism in apical buds.
