Reaction of ammonium heptamolybdate with fused phthalodinitrile (1,2-dicyanobenzene) gave blue oxomolybdenum(IV) phthalocyanine, MoO(C32H16N8) (MoOPc). Reactions involved in the preparation are discussed. MoOPc sublimes at 400°C in vacuo giving a violet second crystalline form. The IR spectrum showed a characteristic MoO vibrations at 974 cm−1. The electronic spectrum of MoOPc in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene showed a characteristic metallophthalocyanine peak at 703 nm and a weaker peak at 643 nm. In pyridine new peaks appeared and the spectrum changed with time. Methods of synthesis and applications of molybdenum phthalocyanines are reviewed.
