2,6-Bis(mercaptomethyl)pyridine (H2L) and its binuclear nickel(II), palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes, containing the dianion as a bridging ligand, were prepared and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic data. Square-planar geometries are proposed for these divalent metal complexes. Cyclic voltammetry of Ni2L2 in DMSO shows a reversible one-electron reduction wave at −1.48 V vs a Ag/AgBF4 reference electrode. Quantitative reduction of this complex by controlled potential electrolysis at −1.80 V yielded the corresponding NiI product as shown by ESR spectroscopy.
