Raman and infrared spectra of the trimethylphosphine complex of silver iodide, [(CH3)3P·AgI]4, are reported for the first time. Although a complete vibrational assignment could not be made in the absence of polarization data, the presence of the Ag4I4 cluster (Td symmetry) is confirmed and the fundamentals are identified in low-frequency spectra. The ν(AgP) symmetric stretching wavenumber is found at 122 cm−1 in the Raman spectrum and the ν(PC) and δ(PC3) ligand vibrations are compared with tetrahedrally-coordinated (CH3)3P in species such as Ni[P(CH3)3]4.
