Recent experimental studies and calculations have revealed that only two conformational isomers of racemic 2,4-dichloro- and dibromopentane are low enough in energy to be appreciably present at ordinary temperatures. Although the two stable conformers and their energy difference are known for each case, it was not possible to experimentally identify which was lower in energy. Studies of the temperature dependence of chemical shifts when compared with the results of calculations can enable such identifications to be performed. These studies identify the lowest energy conformer in both cases to be that one in which all five carbon atoms lie in the same plane, the trans-trans structure.
