The demand for natural colorants and the potential biopolymer applications of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) have attracted special attention of the cosmetic and food industry. The purpose of the present work was to analyze the co-production of total carotenoids, C-PHYCOCYANIN (cas 11016-15-2) (C-PC) and PHA by Arthrospira platensis in cultivation under different concentrations of nitrogen. Under reduced nitrogen (0.25 g·L−1), biomass productivity (27.5 mg·L−1·d−1) was not compromised in comparison to cultivation in control medium (28.0 mg·L−1·d−1), and C-PC and total carotenoid attained 81.1 mg·g−1 and 2.7 mg·g−1, respectively. In nitrogen-reduced medium, PHA content (5.6 mg·g−1) was higher than that attained in the control (3.2 mg·g−1) and similar (5.8 mg·g−1) to that of nitrogen-free medium. Chloroform was chosen as the solvent for the extraction of the biomasses produced in the different media as an attempt to replace it by MTBE was not satisfactory because the amount of PHA recovered was very lower in this solvent.
