The oxidation of ferrous-nickelous hydroxide in chloride-containing aqueous media gives for values of P = Fe/Ni greater than one-third, an hydroxychloride isomorphous to Green Rust 1, 3Fe(OH)2 · Fe(OH)2Cl · nH2O, where Ni2+ ions substitute for Fe2+ ions. At P = 13, stoichiometry is reached and 3Ni(OH)2 · Fe(OH)2Cl · nH2O is stable to further oxidation. X-Ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used to study the end products of oxidation, among which a nickelous-ferric [4/(P + 1)]Ni(OH)2 · [(3P − 1)/(P + 1)]FeOOH · Fe(OH)2Cl · nH2O hydroxychloride is obtained when P ⩾ 13.
