This investigation has demonstrated that a purified protein from bovine blood may be obtained in solid form and in high yield which, when incubated with trypsin, releases pharmacologically active material that appears to be bradykinin or a very similar material. The material liberated contracts guinea pig ileum, causes vasodepression in the cat via vasodilation, and is destroyed by chymotrypsin. This precursor protein is obtained by relatively simple procedures and apparently can be stored without deterioration. The preparation is highly reproducible. Certain physical properties of the protein have been studied as well as the kinetics of its reaction with trypsin. One mg of the average preparation releases 0.8 to 1.0 μg of bradykinin when incubated with trypsin under the conditions described.
