The hitherto unknown Na2NiF6 is obtained in an impure state by high pressure fluorination of samples prepared by the usual fluorination of “Na2NiO3”. Guinier photographs show the presence of a cubic lattice with a = 7·77 Å, and the existence of a hexagonal form with a = 5·63 Å and c = 9·07 Å is also indicated.The electronic spectrum of the hexafluoronickelate (IV) anion in K2NiF6 and in the impure Na2NiF6 has been studied by diffuse reflectance, and the d-d bands in each case are found to accord with the assumption of a 1A1g(t2g6) ground state.
