Electrodeposition of Zn was performed in 1‑allyl‑3-methylimidazolium bromide (AMImBr) containing ZnBr2. The effects of the temperature and salt concentration on the morphology and composition of the electrodeposited Zn were observed and analyzed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Silvery, smooth, and compact Zn deposits with a good adherence were obtained from the electrolyte. The particle size increased with the temperature. Raman spectra of the electrolyte indicated that Zn2+ and Br− could form complex ions. ZnBr42− was the dominant species when the ZnBr2 concentration was CZnBr2 ≤ 2.0 mol·kg−1; the peak from the ZnBr3− complex was observed for CZnBr2 ≥ 2.5 mol·kg−1. The morphology of the electrodeposited Zn was influenced by the ZnBr2 concentration; the complex ion species changed the shape of the primary particles of the electrodeposited Zn.
