Poly(2-bromoethyl methacrylate) degrades thermally in three well defined stages to give monomer as the main product together with small proportions of vinyl bromide and carbon dioxide. These products are accounted for in terms of competing reactions of depolymerization and ester decomposition. A 50/50 copolymer of 2-bromoethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate yields only a mixture of the two monomers.
