The effect of subchronic administration of the pesticide dodine (n-dodecylguanidine acetate) on rat small intestine was studied after 90 days of oral administration at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day. No alteration was observed in the body weight evolution or food intake during this period. The protein contents and sucrase and alkaline phosphatase activity of the duodenal, jejunal, and ileal mucosa were determined after the treatment period. The pesticide induced a significant increase in the protein contents of the ileum, which affected the activity of the enzymes when they are expressed as a function of protein amount. A slight increase in plasma protein contents was also observed in treated animals. Morphological aspects of the three segments were observed, and crypt height and villous length and depth were measured. No alterations were observed in these parameters.
