Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the analytical profile of scopolamine hydrobromide. Generic names of scopolamine hydrobromide are: scopolamine hydrobromide; hyoscine hydrobromide; scopolammonium bromide; and scopolamine bromohydrate. The structure of scopolamine has been confirmed by total synthesis, which was achieved by several authors. The stereochemistry of scopolamine has been determined by chemical means along with the X-ray crystalographic study of the hydrobromide salt. The structure of (-) - (S) -scopolamine hydrobromide revealed the conformation of the tropine residue to be as expected, with the six-membered ring in the chair conformation. Scopolamine occurs as a viscous liquid, colorless, odorless. It forms a crystalline monohydrate. Scopolamine hydrobromide occurs as a rhmobic crystals, or as a white crystalline powder, slightly efforescent in dry air, odorless, and has a very bitter taste. The X-ray diffraction pattern of scopolamine hydrobromide was determined with a Philips X-ray diffraction spectroeoniometer equipped with PW 1730 generator. Scopolamine occurs along with hyoscyamine and/or atropine in several Solanaceous plants, such as species of Atropa, Datura, Hyoscyamus, Duboisia, Mandragora and Scopolia.
