Tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) is a fluorine-based monomer, which belongs to the family of fluorocarbons. It has the chemical formula C2F4, which is like ethylene or ethene (C2H4 or H2CCH2). TFE is the simplest per-fluorinated alkene. In the industry, TFE is used primarily in the preparation of polymers, such as Teflon which is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The exposure is mainly by inhalation and dermal contact. In 2014, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated this compound and classified as Group 2A, that is, “probably carcinogenic” to humans. The decision was grounded based on enough carcinogenetic evidence in bioassays with a striking and unusual pattern of tumors, which deployed at several sites and with very high incidence in male and female rodents after TFE exposure.
