Rooted cuttings of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.) propagated in Oasis® Rootcubes® were pre-treated by direct application of Ancymidol (cas 12771-68-5) (α-cyclopropyl-α-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol) or chlormequat (2-chloroethyl-trimethylammonium chloride) to cubes prior to planting. Soil drenches and foliar sprays were used for comparison. Of the 3 methods, foliar sprays were least effective in controlling height. Pre-plant application of ancymidol produced heights equivalent to soil drenches. Days to flower and inflorescence diameters were similar for pre-plant and soil-drench applications with ancymidol and were not sensitive to rates of either chlormequat or ancymidol. Total top dry weight and bract dry weight were reduced concomitantly with height by pre-plant treatments with ancymidol. Chlormequat pre-plant applications limited stem elongation, but the highest rates caused some phytotoxicity.
