SummaryPolarographic investigations on substituted styryl-α-thienyl ketones have been carried out. In 50% aqueous-ethanolic buffered media, the unsubstituted compound viz. 1-(2-thienyl)-3-phenyl-2-propenone gave two one-electron reduction waves in acidic solutions, and an additional third two-electron wave in alkaline solutions. The waves were found to be affected differently by changes in pH. A possible mechanism for the electroreduction of styryl-α-thienyl ketones has been suggested. At low pH, addition of the first two electrons occurs at the ethylenic bond, resulting in two waves. The effect of ten substituents on the E1/2 of 1-(2-thienyl)-3-phenyl propenone has been examined. Electron-donating groups shift the E1/2 of the parent compound towards more negative values whereas electron accepting substituents make E1/2 more positive.
