Crown ethers are macrocyclic polyethers. Together with the nearly contemporaneous discovery of cryptands, they underlay the field that is now called supramolecular chemistry. These compounds bind alkali metal and alkaline earth cations, which lack the complex orbital structures of transition metals and had lacked effective synthetic receptors. Initial work explored structural variations and the ability of these varied structures to bind and transport ions. By virtue at least of their ability to bind cations, they exhibit a range of biological activity. Many crown structures were modified so that cation binding and release could be controlled. Some had elements appended that could respond to light or other stimuli to report binding. Others were formed into polymers that multiplied the efficacy of individual rings. Eventually, macrocycles became modular platforms for more complex supramolecular assemblies.
