Several functional group exchange reactions were discussed in second and third chapters, but these reactions primarily focused on molecules that contained sp3 hybridized carbon atoms, or sp and sp2 hybridized carbon atoms bonded to other carbon atoms. The chemistry of carbonyl compounds, with a sp2 hybridized carbon atom bonded to an oxygen, comprises a large and important area of organic chemistry. This chapter introduces fundamental reaction types associated with carbonyl compounds, primarily as a review of reactions introduced in an undergraduate organic chemistry course. The three major reaction types are acyl addition, acyl substitution, and conjugate addition reactions of conjugated carbonyl compounds. Compilations of reactions found in this chapter are available.
