This chapter discusses Bismaleimide (cas 13676-54-5) (BMI) resin systems and their components. They are noted for their high-strength, high-temperature performance, particularly as matrix resins in fiber-reinforced prepregs and composites. They are bridging the gap between the relatively low-temperature-resistant epoxy systems and the very-high-temperature-resistant polyimides. Unfortunately, BMIs are somewhat brittle, and thus subject to impact induced damage. The toughness of BMI resins is a major problem that is limiting the field of application. To improve this characteristic, the reactive components to be added are briefly discussed. BMI resins are flame retardant, because they are comprised of aromatic groups and nitrogen. In comparison to epoxy resins, 4,4′-bis(-maleimido)diphenylmethane (BDM) resins exhibit higher tensile strength and modulus, excellent chemical and corrosion resistance, better dimensional stability, and good performances at elevated temperature.
