Preparation of 2-Mercaptoethanol: it is prepared by reaction of ethylene oxide and hydrogen sulfide with the molar ratio of 1:3.5. The reaction occurs with catalyst strong alkaline anionic exchange resin at the temperature of 40 °C.

2-Mercaptoethanol is prepared by reaction of hydrogen sulfide with ethylene oxide.

Uses of 2-Mercaptoethanol: it is used to make some proteins be denatured via its ability to cleave disulfide bonds. Besides, it is used in some RNA isolation procedures to eliminate ribonuclease released during cell lysis.
