Arabic gum Specification

The Arabic gum, with the CAS registry number 9000-01-5, is also known as Acacia ampliceps gum. Its EINECS number is 232-519-5. Its classification codes are: (1)Mutation data; (2)Natural Product; (3)Pharmaceutic aid [suspending and/or viscosity agent]; (4)Pharmaceutic aid [suspending andor viscosity agent]; (5)Reproductive Effect; (6)Skin / Eye Irritant; (7)Tumor data. It is powdered exudate from various acacia species, especially A. senegal (Leguminosae). It forms mucilage or syrup in water. It is used as a suspending agent, excipient, and emulsifier in foods and pharmaceuticals. It should be sealed and stored in a cool and dry place.  The main populations of Arabic gum species are harvested in Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. The gum exported came from the band of Acacia trees which once covered much of the Sahel region: the southern littoral of the Sahara Desert running from the Atlantic to the Red Sea.
