The Bromine pentafluoride, with the CAS registry number 7789-30-2, is also known as Bromine fluoride. It belongs to the product category of Inorganic Fluorides. Its EINECS number is 232-157-8. Bromine pentafluoride reacts explosively with water by reaction, forming bromic acid and hydrofluoric acid. It is an extremely effective fluorinating agent, converting most uranium compounds to the hexafluoride at room temperature. It finds use in oxygen isotope analysis. It is also used as an oxidizer in liquid rocket propellants and as a fluorinating agent in the processing of uranium.

Preparation: it was first prepared in 1930 by the direct reaction of bromine with fluorine. Preparation of larger quantities can be accomplished by reaction at temperatures over 150 °C with an excess of fluorine. For the preparation of smaller amounts, the following second reaction is used. This route yields bromine pentafluoride almost completely free of trifluorides and other impurities.
