Nylon 6 Uses

1. POLYAMIDE-6(25038-54-4) is used for making high load mechanical parts, electric switches and equipment, building materials, etc.
2. POLYAMIDE-6(25038-54-4) is widely used in the textile industry for manufacturing fiber.
3. POLYAMIDE-6(25038-54-4) is widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts, gear, shell, oil resistant containers, cable sheath, etc.
4. Bristles for toothbrushes, sutures for surgery, etc.
5. Manufacture of hosiery, knitted garments, etc.
6. Manufacture of a large variety of threads, ropes, filaments, nets, tire cords, etc.
7. Classical guitar strings
8. Gun frames, such as those used by Glock, are made with a composite of Nylon 6 and other polymers.

Nylon 6 Production

The reaction between adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine produces hexamethylenediammonium adipate, commonly called nylon salt (Fig. l) Forming the salt assures the correctly balanced proportions. It is also necessary that the material to be polymerized contain very few impurities if high-quality fibers are to be made by a variety of routes (Fig. 2).

FIGURE 2 Various routes to nylon.
Nylon 6, or nylon caprolactam, is a polymeric fiber derived from only one constituent, caprolactam, giving the polymer [-(CH2)5CONH-]n. It has a lower melting point than nylon 6,6, but it is superior to it in resistance to light degradation, elastic recovery, fatigue resistance, and thermal stability.
