Preparation of Methanesulfinic acid,hydroxy-, monosodium salt, dihydrate (8CI,9CI): Drop zinc dithionite solution into 40% formaldehyde, and heat it gradually. Add zinc dust when the temperature reach 95-100°C, and keep warm for several hours, then it will give precipitate. Add 42% NaOH solution to react with the precipitate until the free alkali content is about 0.3-0.5%. Defecate with filter pressing, and after a series of vacuum concentration and cooling crystallization, you can get the product.

Uses of Methanesulfinic acid,hydroxy-, monosodium salt, dihydrate (8CI,9CI): It can be used as white discharging agent, reducing agent, bleaching agent and vat dyes. It is also used in the synthesis of rubber and suger, and plays roles in polymerization of vinyl compounds.
