Storax Specification

The Storax is also known as Asiatic styrax. Its EINECS registry number is 232-458-4. With the CAS registry number 8046-19-3, its classification code is TSCA UVCB. Storax is the resinous exudate of the Sweetgum (Liquidambar orientalis), occasionally used in incense or as an aromatic fixative in perfumery.

Preparation: Eduard Simon extracted an oily liquid from storax through water damp distillation in 1839. He named it "styrol" which translates to styrene in english. According to styrene was distillated before by others. Styrene polymerises under natural conditions to polystyrene. The similarly named styrax is from a different plant.
