Effects on health
Precautions: Manufacturers advise users not to use DEET products in direct contact with damaged skin or in clothing. When not needed, the preparation can be washed off with water. Deet acts as an irritant, so skin irritation is inevitable.

The decision to reregister deET came as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced 14 to 46 seizures, including four deaths, that could potentially be linked to deET. "It is true that deET may be toxic in some cases," the EPA statement said, but surveys show that 30 percent of Americans use deET, so the incidence of epilepsy is only one in 100 million.

According to the Report from Cornell University's Joint Development Office for Pesticide Intelligence Program, "Employees with high DEET use in evergles National Park experienced more insomnia, anxiety, and cognitive decline than those with low DEET exposure. The American Academy of Pediatrics study found no difference in safety between 10 percent and 30 percent of children using products directly, but it is not recommended for infants under two months old.

A new study published in BMC Biology suggests that DEET inhibits the activity of a key enzyme in the central nervous system, and researchers believe it is necessary to re-examine the safety of DEET. An international team led by French researchers has found that DEET inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme critical in the central nervous systems of both insects and mammals. The researchers say,

Deet is often used in combination with other insecticides, but its toxicity is enhanced when used in combination with carbamate insecticides. The researchers say public health concerns call for further research into the safety of DEET.

Impact on the environment
Deet is a non-potent chemical insecticide and may not be suitable for use in and around water sources, although few studies have assessed the environmental impact of deET. Although deET is not a biological reservoir as thought, it has been found to be mildly toxic to cold-water fish such as rainbow trout and tilapia, and experiments have shown that it is also toxic to some freshwater plankton species. As a result of the production and use of DEET products, high concentrations of deET have been detected in some water bodies. In 1991, for example, concentrations of 5 to 201 nanograms per liter of DEET were detected in the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

Details:

Laboratory method
Diethylamine and m-methyl-benzoic acid.

M-toluenoic acid and phosphorus trichloride generated m-toluenoic acid chloride, and then ammonia hydrolysis with diethylamine to form or convert m-toluenoic acid with thionyl chloride to m-toluenoyl chloride; N, N- diethyl - m-toluenamide was prepared by reaction of m-toluenoyl chloride with diethylamine.

Reagents: M-toluene formic acid, thionyl chloride, ether, diethylamine, 5% NaOH, distilled water, 10% HCl, anhydrous sodium sulfate

Equipment: reflux condensing tube, rubber tube, wet towel, three-neck-round bottom flask, beaker, test tube, dropper, drying device, vacuum distillation device

Weigh 2.8g of m-toluenic acid and add it into a 500mL three-necked round bottom flask, then add 4.5ml of thionyl chloride, fill it with one, connect the top end with a rubber tube, wrap the other end of the rubber tube with a wet towel, and place it on the drain. The other end of the three-necked bottle is provided with a constant pressure funnel. Heat the reactants slowly until no gas is released. After the reactants were cooled, 120ml of ether was added. Add 7ml of diethylamine ether solution to a constant pressure funnel. Add a small amount of diethylamine ether solution several times, while pay attention to the boiling situation, not too much reaction, about 20 to 25 minutes. During the addition process, the formation of flocculent matter should be paid attention to.

After adding diethylamine, rinse the solids stuck on the condensation tube wall with a small amount of water, add 35mL 5% NaOH solution into the solution, divide the solution, and then wash the ether layer with 5% NaOH solution. Then the ether layer was washed once with 10% HCl and water, and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. After drying, the ethyl ether was vaporized and distilled under the pressure of 2.7x103Pa, and the fractions were collected at 160~163℃.

In the process of forming acyl chloride, the gas outlet can be wrapped with a wet dishcloth, and cannot be put together with the outlet of condensed water, otherwise the phenomenon of suction will occur, leading to the failure of the experiment, and even dangerous.

The addition speed of diethylamine should be controlled. If it is added too fast, the outlet of the constant pressure funnel will be blocked.

In vacuum distillation, attention should be paid to the installation, sealing, operation and other technical requirements of the whole unit.

The reaction process is airtight and fully ventilated. When the concentration in the air exceeds the limit, must wear self-suction filter type gas mask (half mask). When emergency rescue or evacuation, should wear air respirator.

Wear chemical safety goggles.

Wear permeable protective clothing.

Wear rubber oil-resistant gloves.

Smoking is strictly prohibited on site. After work, shower and change.

[Contraindications] : strong oxidant, strong reducing agent, strong acid, strong base.
