This paper reports some major improvements for the radical polymerization of 3-nitro-4-chlorostyrene (4CNS), the reactivity of which is expected to be high according to the Hammett free energy relationship. Some features of the polymerization of 4CNS have been studied; the results of bulk, solution and emulsion polymerizations are compared. The use of neutral or anionic surfactants leads to unstable emulsions but stable ones can be formed with cationic surfactants. Even if the intrinsic viscosities for polymers of 4CNS are low for all experimental conditions of polymerization, they are higher than those reported for 3-nitrostyrene; the redox system K2S2O8/Na2S2O5/FeSO4, with stearyltrimethylammonium chloride as surfactant, leads to almost quantitative conversion of 4CNS.
