The densities and viscosities of tri-n-propylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-butylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-pentylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-hexylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-heptylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-octylamine hydrochloride, tri-n-decylamine hydrochloride and tri-n-dodecylamine hydrochloride solutions in benzene up to 0·25 mole/kg were measured at 25°C. The apparent molal volumes of the investigated compounds were found to be concentration independent and are correlated by the equation ΦV2 = 30·64 + 17·02 (±0·23)n, where n represents the number of CH2 units per salt molecule. The relative viscosities are fitted by the relation ηr = 1 + Bm + Dm2 and the B and D coefficients are discussed in terms of solute-solvent and solute-solute interactions. The values of the B and D coefficients obtained increase with increasing chain length. The B values are described by the equation B = 0·303 (±0·011) + 8·3 × 10−4 (±2 × 10−5)n2.
