1.What is d-α Tocopherol ?
The Vitamin E is a fat soluble antioxidant vitamin that helps to neutralize potentially damaging free radicals in our body. It exists in eight different forms, d-alpha-tocopherol being the most active form and one of the most powerful biologically active antioxidants. Each form has a different level of potency (functional use) in the body. The tocopherol and tocotrienol subfamilies are each composed of alpha, beta, gamma and delta vitamins having unique biological effects, with generally declining activity; e.g. delta is far less active than the alpha form.
2.what's the application of d-α Tocopherol ?
The d-α-tocopherol is able to protect, at least in part, against the harmful effects of diabetes on renal function. In fact, the hypertrophic response usually found in diabetes was prevented by D-α-tocopherol administration; tubular acidification, which was significantly changed by diabetes, also showed values similar to those observed in controls. These results indicate that D-α-tocopherol may be useful against the progression of renal injury
usually seen in the chronic diabetic state.
3.Where can we get d-α Tocopherol ?
The d-α-Tocopherol is prepared from a mixture obtained from natural intermediates and containing α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherols, by methylation at the aromatic ring of the tocopherols by reaction with formaldehyde or with a compound which donates formaldehyde under the reaction conditions, and subsequent catalytic hydrogenation, by a process in which the reaction with formaldehyde or with the formaldehyde donor is carried out at from 150° to 200° C. in the presence of an alkyl ester of phosphoric or phosphorous acid.
