Potassium iodate Analytical Methods

Method One: It is obtained from potassium hydroxide and iodine direct reaction.
Method Two: In dilute nitric acid medium, it can be obtained from direct oxidation of potassium chlorate and iodine.

Potassium iodate Specification

The Potassium iodate, with the CAS registry number 7758-05-6, is also known as Iodic acid potassium salt. It belongs to the product categories of Inorganics; Reagent Grade; Synthetic Reagents; Analytical Reagents for General Use; Titrimetry; Titrimetry CRMs; Alphabetic; Application CRMs; Metal and Ceramic Science; Potassium Salts; Salts; Halogenated Solutions Volumetric Solutions; Salt Solutions; Titration; Volumetric Solutions; ACS Grade Synthetic Reagents; Essential Chemicals; Inorganic Salts; Routine Reagents; Reference Material Sodium thiosulfate Titration; By Reference Material; Materials Science. Its EINECS number is 231-831-9. This chemical's molecular formula is IKO3 and molecular weight is 214.00. What's more, its systematic name is Potassium iodate. Its classification codes are: (1)Anti-Infective Agents; (2)Antifungal agents. Potassium iodate is an oxidizing agent and as such it can cause fires if in contact with combustible materials or reducing agents. Potassium iodate is sometimes used for iodination of table salt. In other countries, potassium iodate is used as source for iodine. It is also an ingredient in baby formula milk. Like potassium bromate, potassium iodate is occasionally used as a maturing agent in baking.

Physical properties of Potassium iodate are: (1)#H bond acceptors: 3; (2)#H bond donors: 1; (3)#Freely Rotating Bonds: 0; (4)Polar Surface Area: 54.37 Å2.

Preparation: it can be prepared by reacting a potassium-containing base such as potassium hydroxide with iodic acid. It can also be prepared by adding iodine to a hot, concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide. Or by fusing potassium iodide with potassium chlorate, bromate or perchlorate, the melt is extracted with water and potassium iodate is isolated from the solution by crystallization.

When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
This chemical is irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. In case of contact with eyes, you should rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. When contact with combustible material, it may cause fire, so you should keep it away from combustible material. It is harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed and cause harm to the unborn child. You should not breathe gas/fumes/vapour/spray (appropriate wording to be specified by the manufacturer) and should not breathe dust. When using it, you need wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection and you must avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, you must seek medical advice immediately (show the label where possible). It should be avoided exposure, and you should obtain special instructions before use.
