Sodium Chlorite(CAS NO.7758-19-2) is also named as Alcide LD; CCRIS 1426; Caswell No. 755; Chlorite sodium; Chlorous acid, sodium salt; EPA Pesticide Chemical Code 020502; HSDB 733; Neo Silox D; Textile; Textone; UNII-G538EBV4VF. Sodium Chlorite is white flakes. It is soluble in water. It is corrosive to skin and/or metals. Sodium Chlorite is an oxidizing agent. Sodium chlorite reacts very violently with organic materials containing divalent sulfur or with free sulfur (may ignite). Inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with Sodium Chlorite may cause severe injury or death.
Preparation of Sodium Chlorite: Sodium chlorite is derived indirectly from sodium chlorate, NaClO3. First, the explosively unstable gas chlorine dioxide, ClO2 is produced by reducing sodium chlorate in a strong acid solution with a suitable reducing agent (for example, sodium chloride, sulfur dioxide, or hydrochloric acid). The chlorine dioxide is then absorbed into an alkaline solution and reduced with hydrogen peroxide, H2O2 yielding sodium chlorite.
Sodium chlorite is also manufactured from chlorine dioxide, sodium hydroxide, and calcium hydroxide.
4NaOH + Ca(OH)2 + C + 4ClO2 → 4NaClO2 + CaCO3 + 3H2O
After filtering oil, the calcium carbonate, the solution of sodium chlorite(NaClO2) is evaporated and drum-dried.
Uses of Sodium Chlorite: The main application of Sodium Chlorite is the generation of chlorine dioxide for bleaching and stripping of textiles, pulp, and paper. It is also used for disinfection of a few municipal water treatment plants after conversion to chlorine dioxide. In organic synthesis, sodium chlorite is frequently used as a reagent in the Pinnick oxidation for the oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids.
When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
1. Keep away from combustible material;
2. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice;
3. Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection;
4. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show label where possible);
5. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment;
